Salmonella outbreaks are being investigated in 9 counties
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the recalled eggs are linked to the salmonella outbreak. Both the CDC and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating.
Across nine states, 65 people have been infected with salmonella linked to eggs provided by Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. The illnesses began from May 23 to Aug. 10, according to an FDA alert issued Friday. 24 people were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
The CDC says: “The actual number of people sickened in this outbreak is much higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to countries with known infections.” “This is because many people recover without medical attention and are not diagnosed Salmonella. Additionally, recent infections may go unreported as it often takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine whether a sick person is part of an epidemic. “
A CDC investigation brought down the number of 65 reported cases for egg recall. People who contracted salmonella ranged in age from two to 88. Fifty-six percent of the cases were women and 46% were men. The majority of race for the 65 cases was white at 92%, followed by 5% African-American or Black and 3% Asian.
Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC is located in Bonduel, Wisconsin, approximately 29 miles north of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Milo’s Poultry Farm, LLC voluntarily recalled all eggs supplied by their farm in response to the investigation, the FDA said. The recalled eggs were distributed to retailers and food vendors in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan, the alert said.
USA TODAY has reached out to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Business and Consumer Protection, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, and Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC for comment.
According to the CDC, the eggs were labeled Milo’s Poultry Farms or Tony’s Fresh Market.
Tony’s Fresh Market said they are cooperating.
“The health and safety of our customers is our top priority. We are cooperating fully with the FDA in their investigation and have taken immediate action by removing all affected products associated with this recall from the shelves ours,” Marisa Kutansky, spokeswoman for Heritage Grocers. What does the FDA recommend if you have recalled eggs?
Consumers, restaurants and retailers should do the following if they have the recalled eggs:
- Do not eat, sell, or serve the recalled chicken eggs produced by Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC and distributed to restaurants and retailers in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.
- Clean carefully and clean the surfaces or dishes they touched.
- Discard any eggs if you believe they may be associated with a recall.
- Wash hands, dishes and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling raw eggs and raw foods containing eggs.
- Contact your health care provider as soon as possible if you believe you may have had symptoms of salmonella infection after eating eggs.

What is salmonella?
Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain. Symptoms can appear between six hours and six days after exposure and will last four to seven days, the CDC said.
The FDA said that children under five, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk of developing a serious infection if they contract salmonella.
